About Us

The Lynchburg General Hospital Emergency Department (LGH ED) is located at our main campus and serves a large area, about the size of the state of New Jersey. We treat around 200 patients a day and provide many services to people in our region.

Our ED also supports three other community Emergency Departments:

  • Centra Bedford Community Hospital
  • Centra Southside Community Hospital
  • Centra Gretna Medical Center.

At Lynchburg General Hospital, we offer the following services 24/7:

  • Level II Trauma Center: This means we have trauma surgeons, anesthesia and operating rooms ready to treat serious injuries right away.
  • Accredited Chest Pain Center: We can treat heart problems, including using a "Cath Lab" to remove blockages from the heart.
  • Primary Stroke Center with Thrombectomy: We can quickly treat strokes and even remove blood clots from the brain.
  • Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO): This life-saving treatment helps take over the job of a patient’s heart and lungs when they are damaged by infection or injury.
  • Pediatric Care: We have special areas dedicated to treating children.
  • Mental Health Care: We have specialized spaces to help people dealing with mental health emergencies.
  • EmPATH Program: This program provides short-term support for people with mental health and substance abuse issues.
  • Forensic Nurses: These nurses help collect evidence and support victims of crimes, including trauma, sexual assault, abuse, and human trafficking, and provide follow-up care.
