In her 31 years as a Caregiver at Centra, Donna Sams has experienced mentorship, education, and support from her leaders—guidance she now pays forward to the team she manages at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital’s Cath Lab.

“I've always been in a working role until this past year when Patrice, one of the VPs, basically said, ‘You need to step up and do this,’” Sams said. “I accepted the job, and it comes with highs and lows, but it's very rewarding to see what my staff can do, how I can help them, and how I can recognize and develop them into better leaders.”

Since stepping into leadership, Sams has continued fostering a culture of positivity and encouragement, just as she experienced as a Caregiver.

“Someone took the time to invest in me, so I want to invest in my employees,” Sams said. “I have some really good ones, and I want to encourage them to see what they have inside of them.”

Teamwork is key to success in the lab, especially during busy seasons or complex cases. Building trust fosters accountability and growth, strengthening the entire team.

Donna Sams“We've built strong relationships, and that teamwork is crucial in the rooms,” Sams said. “The older nurses coach the newer ones, which has been very beneficial inside and outside of procedures because they’re helping and learning from each other.”

Looking ahead, Sams envisions expanding the Cath Lab’s capabilities by offering more procedures and studies for patients. She hopes to see the team and facility grow with additional providers and procedure rooms.

The Cath Lab team embodies the values Centra strives to instill in all Caregivers, and they intentionally work to grow in those areas. Strengthening the team has been central to Sams’ leadership.

“Kindness towards each other and excellent care for our patients—this team’s close-knit bond has helped uphold those values tremendously,” Sams said.

A strong, supportive environment also allows room for camaraderie. The lab team collaborates with service line providers through educational challenges that push them to sharpen their skills.

“Team engagement and unity have made this lab stronger,” Sams said. “It has helped us ensure the success and safety of our patients. The bond we’ve built together has been key in all those aspects.”

Sams plans to remain focused on strengthening relationships, upholding Centra’s core values, and providing the highest level of patient care. Through trust, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose, the Cath Lab team exemplifies what it means to work together for the greater good.
